Giving Tuesday 2017: What Not to Miss

What was once a holiday plea has become a growing movement. This year, Giving Tuesday 2017 falls on November 28. It offers a unique opportunity to join others across the world in making a difference. Here is what you need to know about this event.

A New Tradition of the Holidays

Thanksgiving is a holiday of rituals and traditions, some new and some old. The smell of turkey in the oven and the sounds of football are just two of the most popular and enduring. In more recent years, the consumer frenzy of Black Friday (discounts at retailers) and Cyber Monday (online discounts) have also become staples of the season. Thankfully, a newer tradition – one more altruistic – is also quickly taking hold: Giving Tuesday.

What is Giving Tuesday?

This movement focuses on social media to spread awareness.  You may have seen it as  #GivingTuesday on  FacebookTwitter or Instagram. It is a groundswell of global giving built by individuals, families, organizations, businesses and communities across all 50 states and in countries around the world. Millions of people come together on Giving Tuesday – always the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving – to support and champion the causes they believe in and the communities in which they live.

How Did Giving Tuesday Begin?

Giving Tuesday began in 2012, when the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact team at the 92nd Street Y partnered with the United Nations Foundation to launch a charitable movement. This New York City cultural center had been fostering values of service and giving in the Big Apple since 1874. Through collaborative teams of influencers with varying expertise and from all walks of life, the movement evolved to reach far beyond its home base in Manhattan.

The Impact of Giving Tuesday

While fundraising is amplified in the final few months of the year, for many charities, Giving Tuesday is their most successful day of the year. In 2016 alone, Giving Tuesday earned charities more than 1.5 million individual gifts, totaling $177 million across 98 countries around the world.

How Can You Join Giving Tuesday 2017?

#GivingTuesday is a celebration of generosity and community, and the best part is that everyone has something to give, whether it’s volunteering your time, making a charitable contribution to a cause close to your heart, or a simple act of kindness. Plus, there are plenty of causes to support; during Giving Tuesday 2017, you can find more than 35,000 organizations participating.

What Not to Miss on Giving Tuesday 2017

This Giving Tuesday 2017, Operation Warm will be asking for your help to support kids in need and our firefighter programs. If you feel led to support the local communities across our country, please consider making a donation. Your contribution will help us provide brand-new winter coats to children in need, helping improve self-confidence, peer acceptance, school attendance, and overall wellness – because we believe a new winter coat can provide more than just warmth, it provides hope to a child in need.
