How We Get Our Coats
When Operation Warm started, over a decade ago, it bought coats from retailers, at the end of the winter season that had not been sold. It was immediately clear that this was not the ideal way to provide coats to needy children, because coats were not usually available from retailers until the winter was over, sizes were random and often did not meet the needs of the organizations that needed coats.
So the solution became evident; if Operation Warm was to be able to supply coats to children in the sizes and styles (boys and girls) required, they would have to manufacture them. So today, that is how we source our coats; we work with manufacturers to develop the sizes and styles we require. We don’t want these coats to all be the same and appear to be a uniform, so each box of coats contains the same sizes but in a variety of colors. We don’t accept order for styles, but children may have a selection of styles and colors and can often, but not always, choose which one they prefer. We also inspect all the materials and designs to guarantee that our coats are made to our standards and, most importantly, will last and keep children warm.
Because we manufacture a large quantity of coats each year, we are able to offer other organizations, who traditionally have purchased coats from retailers, an alternative. They can order from us and get coats when they need them and in the sizes they require. We deliver them when requested, and that eliminates expensive storage charges as well. As a result, we provide organizations an opportunity to purchase coats at more reasonable prices, thus enabling them to expand the number of children they are able to serve.
