The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army traces its antecedents to England and the mid-19th century. The Christian Mission was described as a "Volunteer Army" and William Booth, its founder, named it The Salvation Army based on its Christian roots. The first Salvation Army meeting took place in the United States in Philadelphia in 1879, and it officially began its service programs a year later.

Today, The Salvation Army in the United States is headquartered in Alexandria, VA, and is divided into four operating territories. The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. It provides a wide range of social services to meet human needs.
