10 Year Old Runs Antarctica Marathon for Operation Warm

Youngest to Complete a Marathon On Antarctica
King George Island, Antarctica - On January 26, 2014, ten-year-old marathoner Nikolas Toocheck finished the White Continent Marathon on Antarctica. Yes, Antarctica, where he ran with the penguins!
Nikolas launched a campaign at age nine called, “Running the World for Children.” His goal is to complete a marathon on each of the seven continents to raise both contributions and awareness for Operation Warm, a nonprofit that provides brand new winter coats to children living in need throughout the United States. A year ago, Nikolas embarked on his journey to help kids in need by completing his first marathon on December, 2012.
Why does he do it? Nikolas says, “I get to do something I love and help kids at the same time. It’s so cool.”
And as a bonus, this young philanthropic adventurer is setting world records. Based on available records, he is the youngest person to ever to complete an Antarctic marathon, and has done so twice over!
He completed the 2013 inaugural White Continent Marathon last February at age nine. However, because of the weather, he was forced to leave after only 18 miles completed on Antarctica and finish the remaining 8.2 miles in Chile. Though the WCM is certified and recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as an Antarctic marathon, Nikolas and hid dad were so fortunate to be offered the opportunity to do it again. Steve Hibbs, owner and creator of the Marathon Adventures White Continent Marathon, graciously offered this trip free of charge to Nikolas and his dad to have the chance to finish the marathon in its entirety on Antarctica.
And they did it; what an accomplishment in addition to his first Antarctic achievement! What does Nikolas say about round two? “It was a tough run; really windy, snowy and icy but really great. I’m so lucky! And I got to visit with the penguins again. That was totally awesome too!” Nikolas continues, “I hope running another race in such a cold place inspires people to donate and help keep kids here warm and happy through Operation Warm.”
Perhaps Nikolas’s wish will continue to encourage others to support his cause. To date, Nikolas’s “Running the World for Children” campaign, has provided brand new winter coats to over 1,400 children in need, raising more than $28,000. Although Nikolas is extremely grateful for so many contributions, he has set a steep goal. As you can imagine, this little guy aims big, he wants to raise $1 million dollars, a dollar for each one of his steps in a 7 marathon goal—helping 50,000 children in need. Nikolas hopes that what he is doing inspires other kids to realize that they can make a positive difference in the world by doing something they love too.
