Boston Children Get New Winter Coats Just in Time for the Snow

Posted by Patrick Rosso January 23, 2012 for boston.com Now that Boston has experienced its first significant winter snowfall, a few thousand young people in the city will be better prepared for any upcoming storms, thanks to the free coats they received Saturday from the Boston Foundation and Operation Warm. At two sites throughout the city, Maverick Landing in East Boston and the Sportsmen’s Tennis & Enrichment Center in Dorchester, volunteers gathered to distribute more than 1,000 coats to students ages 3-12 who live in six Boston Housing Authority developments—Maverick Landing, Orient Heights, Franklin Field, Franklin Hills, Fairmount, and Gallivan.

Operation Warm close to giving away 1 millionth coat

More than a decade ago, Dick Sanford founded Operation Warm. Now the Chester County organization is preparing to give away its one millionth coat. Last year alone, the nonprofit handed out more than 180,000 coats. The Kennett Paper talked to Sanford, who said Operation Warm plans to make some coats next year from recycled plastic bottles. The move to go green is gradual. In the meantime, Sanford is considering moving manufacturing from China to Haiti to reduce travel emissions and create jobs in Haiti.VIEW MORE

ADCK is gearing up for another big year. In the fall of 2010 they plan on providing over 20,000 coats to underprivileged children in need in a five county region of greater Philadelphia.
