Recycle
Plastic bottles can be recycled into fabrics and used to make winter coats. Simply put, containers are cleaned and crushed into tiny chips to produce thread, which is woven into fabrics. One leading retailer that sells garments from recycled material estimates that 25 soda bottles go into each recycled jacket. We are developing a new winter coat made from recycled bottles.
In 2009, we began an experiement to develop coats made from recyled materials, today we are working with our manufacturers to find better recycled fabrics made from plastic bottles for the outer and inner shells of the winter coats. They estimate that for every meter of polyester fabric made of 80% recycled material, eight plastic beverage bottles are kept out of landfills. Making polyester from recycled bottles can be a significant means of reducing the amount of plastic in the landfills. They believe that this recycling process can be less damaging to the environment in many ways. For example, the energy used to make polyester from recycled plastic is said to be significantly less than that needed to heat the chemicals for virgin polyester.
Operation Warm is working on a recycled winter coat that we hope to manuafcature in 2011 - to protect our environment and teach our children about the importance of sustainability.
